Social Studies - Anti-Vietnam War Song

 Hi everyone!

We have just finished our Beatlemania topic in social studies, talking about The Beatles tour around the world. We mainly researched about their tour in New Zealand, about where they went and what happened.

For today´s social studies lesson, we are starting off with a new topic called Woodstock which is connected to the Vietnam war.

For this lesson, we are required to blog about an anti-Vietnam war song. Including the lyrics, what the message of the song is. Also, evidence to back up our statement.

-------------------------------

Jimmy Cliff  - Vietnam

Lyrics:
Hey, Vietnam, Vietnam
Vietnam, Vietnam
Vietnam, Vietnam, Vietnam
Yesterday, I got a letter from my friend fighting in Vietnam
And this is what he had to say
"Tell all my friends that I'll be coming home soon
My time'll be up sometime in June
Don't forget", he said, "To tell my sweet Mary
Her golden lips are sweet as cherry"

And it came from Vietnam, Vietnam
Vietnam, Vietnam
Vietnam, Vietnam, Vietnam

It was just the next day, his mother got a telegram
It was addressed from Vietnam
Now mistress Brown, she lives in the USA
And this is what she wrote and said
"Don't be alarmed", she told me the telegram said
"But mistress Brown, your son is dead"

And it came from Vietnam, Vietnam
Vietnam, Vietnam
Vietnam, Vietnam, hey, Vietnam
Somebody please stop that war now
Vietnam, Vietnam, Vietnam, Vietnam, oh
Vietnam, Vietnam, oh
Vietnam, oh oh, oh oh
Somebody please stop it

Vietnam, Vietnam, oh
Vietnam, Vietnam, oh oh, oh oh
Vietnam, hey, Vietnam, aha
Vietnam, oh oh, yeah

I wanna say now somebody stop that war
Vietnam, oh yeah, aha
The message of this song, regarding the lyrics, shows that its main message is to stop the war. It seems like the author Jimmy Cliff had acknowledged the tragedy from the Vietnam war, and had possibly gone along with other songwriters. Jimmy Cliff's reason for writing this was to stop the war because families were losing their men. But not only that he had also written this song to support the soldiers fighting in the war. His goal or thought once he got a letter from his friend who was fighting in the war. Was to make a change through music, which made him devastated. Is that when his friend got back from the war he was sort of brain dead, he couldn't remember anything. Jimmy Cliff stated that ´it was as if he was dead´.

Social Studies - Perspectives - The Beatles

 Perspectives - The Beatles

For Tour:

Young people were usually the people who were majorly interested in The Beatles. Mainly young girls, most probably because The Beatles were a boy band. Not only that but they also liked the fact. That The Beatles were also trying to normalize relationships and drugs things like that. The youth enjoyed their music and they liked the lyrics, even more, they could relate to them. This gave them the chance to express themselves and be free from their parent's rules and restrictions. Regarding the specific song, ¨She´s a Mod¨ from interviews the youth had mentioned. That they felt they had suddenly been liberated from their parents, oh which where they had also believed. They were the only ones who were able to enjoy themselves properly, this was their reason.

Against Tour:

The people who were against the tour were the older generation like the adults or grandparents. They didn´t like this because they were raised in a different environment and were influenced by the depression from the war. Their music was soft and I guess you would say in a minor key. This was considered boring to the youth, the parents didn´t like the fact that the kids were getting obsessed. The older generation also thought that The Beatles were leading their kids to sin. Sometimes because of all the disappointment, families would be separated.

Wananga - Reflection Section

 Hi everyone!

As usual, I will be doing my weekly Friday reflection section in my Wananga class. For today I will be writing about my book that I am currently reading, it is written by my favorite author so far.

Title:

I Was Born for This

Author:

Alice Oseman

Text Purpose:

What the book is about (so far)

Explanation:

So far from what I have read in the book, it is about a girl who is a big fan of this band named ¨The Ark¨. She really doesn´t have any friends in real life but she had major Ark nerds as her friends from online. They all met up for going to a concert of course for Ark. I almost forgot the protagonist of the book is named Angel, at least that's the meaning of her name. She just likes to go by that name because it sounds a lot nicer. The book alternates between Angels POV and Jimmy´s POV Jimmy is one of the members of the band. In my opinion, I think ironically they will meet each other.

Wananga - Reflection Section

Title: Badminton

Type: Sport

Creator: Created in India

Purpose: To show what badminton is.

Critical Literacy Question: In whose interest is this text?

Well, badminton is a sport, I consider it an easy version of tennis. Even though I love badminton and am humbly saying that I am a bit good. I am absolutely terrible at tennis, itś heavier and it doesńt suit my body structure.

I really enjoy badminton it is a sport that became my first passion although I'm not good it gives me a reason to get better. It is my goal to get better and I am determined to achieve that goal.

10 Science - Making Indicators

Hi!

For todayś blog post, I will be writing about my second blogpost for science, well technically third. Explaining once again our blogging system for science, we need to create two blog postś. Regarding two science experiments out of 5, in my last blog post, I had chosen ´testing pH´.

For today I will be writing about my experiment of when we created indicators an indicator is mainly a chemical that indicates whether something is an acid or a base. We made most of our indicators using naturals ingredients.

---------------------------------------

Aim: To make acid-base indicators using everyday substances.

Equipment:

  • Red Cabbage
  • Tea
  • Beetroot (juice)
  • Turmeric
  • Cranberry Juice
  • Water
  • Alcohol
  • Beakers
  • Tripod
  • Bunsen Burner
  • Gauze Mat
( As we didn't have gas in our science lab we substituted the tripod, bunsen burner, and gauze mat. By heating the water in a kettle instead, it did the same thing as it would´ve with those three pieces of equipment.)

Method:

Task 1:

For the cabbage:
Cut or dice the cabbage and cut enough to fill a beaker, and pour boiling hot water into the beaker till just above the cabbage. Or you could just add normal temperature water into the beaker reaching just over the cabbage. Put over a bunsen burner and wait for ten minutes till the water is a vibrant and bold violet. The same method would be with boiling water from a kettle. You then need to filter out the water by separate the cabbage and the water into another beaker you will only be needing the water. You can do this by using a funnel which is what we did. Or just possibly use a strainer for it to be more efficient.

For the tea:
Once again boil water using a kettle or a bunsen burner make sure the beaker has 100ml of water.  Add three tea bags so it's very strong, this will be resulting in the color of the water is dark brown nearly black. After it has reached that color, remove the tea bags, and set the beaker aside.

For the cranberry juice:
Pour 100ml of cranberry juice into a beaker and set aside

For the beetroot juice or beetroot.
If you have beetroot juice it would be an easier method, as you would only be needing to add 100ml of beetroot juice into a beaker. Which is the method we used, so it made things a lot easier for us. But if you just have beetroot as in the vegetable you will need to dice it and doing the same thing as the cabbage. Either boil it with water in a beaker over a bunsen burner for about ten minutes. Or just simply add boiling water to a beaker with the beetroot. You will then need to filter or separate the water. Make sure the water is a very vibrant and bold violet color before separating. When you are filtering out the water pour it into another beaker to up around 100ml.

For the turmeric and alcohol:
Mix 1 teaspoon of turmeric in 100ml of alcohol in a beaker and set aside.

Task 2:

  1. You now have five beakers, each containing a different indicator.
  2. Using a pipette, place a few drops of any of the indicators that you have created onto 2 dimples on the spotting tile.
  3. Add a few drops of HCI (Acid) to one dimple and a few drops of NaOH (Alkali) to the other dimple.
  4. Record the changes into the table provided in the Scipad.
  5. Clean the pipette and repeat for the Beetroot, Tea, Cranberry, and Turmeric indicators.
Results:

Indicator

Color in HCI (acid)

Color in NaOH (alkali)

Cranberry

Pink

Green

Beetroot

Red

Yellow

Turmeric

Yellow

Orange

Cabbage

Pink

Green

Tea

Orange

Brown

Discussion:

When we were making the indicators we had to compromise with some of the things as we didn't have any gas in the science lab we were in. The results from the experiment were all staying within the acidic range. On the pH scale, but this was because we used substances that had acidic properties. Some of the results were pretty unexpected for example the cranberry, the color when we added alkali. Using natural ingredients was an interesting way to create indicators. This also shows that in possibly any substance it could be an acid or base just by telling from a pH scale.

Conclusion:

I really enjoyed this experiment it was interesting and a unique way to create indicators. It was also entertaining to see what color the indicators would turn out as. Once again, the experiment showed that see whether a substance is an acid or base by using an indicator.

Social Studies - Here Comes the Sun - Music Through Time

Here Come the Sun - The Beatles

--------------------------

Lyrics
Here comes the sun do, do, do
Here comes the sun
And I say it's all right
Little darling, it's been a long cold lonely winter
Little darling, it seems like years since it's been here
Here comes the sun do, do, do
Here comes the sun
And I say it's all right
Little darling, the smiles returning to the faces
Little darling, it feels like years since it's been here
Here comes the sun do, do, do
Here comes the sun
And I say it's all right
Little darling, I feel that ice is slowly melting
Little darling, it seems like years since it's been clear
Here comes the sun do, do, do
Here comes the sun
And I say it's all right
Here comes the sun do, do, do
Here comes the sun
And I say it's all right

George Harrison had written and sang this song at his friend Eric Clapton. The lyrics behind this song show his relief at the arrival of spring. Not only that but also his stress from his band affairs. He wrote this song in early 1969, mentioning again at his friend's country house, he also played to avoid a meeting. He wrote this song in one of his rough times, this was to cheer himself up. As music helps him so much mentally he used it as a stress reliever, thatś why the songś lyrics. Is very optimistic and sort of happy, the beat is also nice and upbeat real proclaiming the motives of being happy.

When comparing this song to the songs before The Beatles, we can already see the difference in the rhythm and beat. This song is very upbeat but also soothing, the lyrics are also different. Their harmony was amazing and astonished many young listeners, mainly young girls.

A fact about the song:
As of September 2019, the song ¨Here Comes the Sun¨ was the most streamed Beatle song on Spotify Globally, including over 350 million plays.

10 Science - Testing pH

Hello Everyone!

Today for my blog I will be writing about my first experiment out of 5. Today's experiment was about testing the pH scale.

We are required to make two blog posts of two experiments out of the five, as regards our grade.

Please give me feedback by commenting :)

-----------------------------------------------------------

Aim:
To test the pH of a range of household chemicals.

Equipment:
  • Variety of household chemicals.
  • Spotting tile
  • Red litmus paper
  • Blue litmus paper
  • Universal indicator solution
  • Safety glasses
  • Pipette
Method:
  1. Add a few drops of each chemical to a spot on your spotting line. If a substance is solid or powdered you will need to mix it with a few drops of water before testing.
  2. Test the chemical with both litmus paper.
  3. Test each chemical with a few drops of universal indicator.

As you can see from this example indicator shows the colors of the rainbow, a universal indicator. Indicates whether something is strongly acidic or has a strong base. Red shows that it is a strong acid and violet shows that it is a strong base. Green usually indicates that it is neutral which would be equivalent to water.

Results:

Chemical being tested

Colour in blue litmus

Colour in red litmus

Colour in the universal indicator

Spray & Wipe

Violet

Blue

Light blue

Fabric softener

Orange

Red

Light orange

Floor Cleaner

Violet

Violet

Yellow

Vinegar

Orange

Orange

Spray & wipe - Base - Because the litmus paper and indicator had turned blue.

Fabric softener - Acid - Because the litmus paper and indicator stayed around 1-4 on the pH scale.

Floor cleaner - Base - The litmus paper had turned blue, judging by the result I can only tell from the litmus paper. As the indicator turned a completely different color, possibly from mixing in with the chemical color.

Vinegar - Acid - Because the litmus paper and indicator stayed around 1-4 on the pH scale.

The test of testing the pH scale was to show us how acidic or how much alkali was in the chemicals. As you can see from this table I have shown the results of the experiment. Some of the chemicals depending on their pH scale benefits their cleaning product.

For example the spray & wipe itś pH scale is base because itś number and colors stay within 8 - 14 or blue to violet. This connects to my recent work from learning about acids and bases. Is that when a base comes in contact with grease or oil it produces a soap that can clean the oil. Since a spray and wipe chemical is usually used to clean that type of particular mess.

The litmus paper was the thing that mainly showed us whether the chemical was acidic or a base. These papers can only turn red or blue which is a straightforward method. Otherwise, the universal indicator specifically shows us the color it is giving us an idea of the results.

Here is a photo I had taken of the results:
(It seems to be a bit blurry)

The results from the experiment weren't what I was expecting, I mean it is an experiment. The colors were all different and depended on whether the chemical has a strong acid or base. Honestly judging by the results it seemed like they were funny enough evenly distributed. The universal indicator is very intriguing and I am still wondering how it detects whether it has a strong base or strong acid. I also wonder how we humans had come to the statement that these colors meant these things. But science is there to provide us a reason or to answer the questions ´why´ or ´how´.

10 Math - Week Holiday Plan

Hi!

For todayś blog post, I will be doing my first math blog post for this year!

For the past few lessons in maths, we have been doing things about financial literacy.

By doing this we have practically been playing games, that sort of teaching us how we need to make very important decisions. Most decisions that you make in life are usually regarding money.

In the games we had to make important decisions where we keep ourselves healthy for example: not starving to death. But also not lose all our money, we even still had to take care of a kid as a single parent.

But coming back to what today blog post is really about:

For a few lessons, we have been creating a holiday plan that extends for a week. But we had to make two types, be which where we had all the money in the world and we could do whatever we want. Second, we had to do the same things but picking the cheapest options.

But I was also partnered with a friend and his name is Lars.

Here is my work and I hope you enjoy it.

10 Social Studies - The Last Post - Music Through Time

Hi everyone!

In today's lesson for social studies, we will be needing to research Anzac day and how music and NZ were involved with it.

To me after learning about ANZAC and creating more of a connection and understanding to the history of it.

I've come to realize appreciate everything our country for us to keep itś people safe, and how people have the initiative to courage to fight for their country. I just really admire people like that.

Briefly talking about the ´The Last Post´ most New Zealanderś would know this song, as itś very important. But if YOU don´t know I will quickly explain, ´The Last Post´ Used to be used as a song that would be played at funerals; particularly military funerals. But it was used for some other slight purposes, now it is used to signify ANZAC.

Here is the song 'The Last Post:

When do you hear this song?

It became a tradition to play 'The Last Post' before the one-minute silence, honoring the soldiers who fought and died for us. In history 'The Last Post' was often used to signify the end of day activities in the military. But it was also used for military funerals to show that the soldier has gone to their final rest.

Why is this song important/significant to NZ?

As NZ sent soldiers and troops to participate in WWI for many reasons, one of them is having strong ties with Britain. Because of WWI, a lot of lives had to be sacrificed even 17-year-olds. Some young people volunteered to fight for their country, as many people died in the war. They created a Bugle call that when a soldier had died they played at funerals. Since the song goes way back in history it is a significant song. It is played till now and has become a tradition to play it every Anzac day.

What is the history behind 'The Last Post' - why was it played and when?

The Last Post used to be used for military funerals, and also usually or sometimes was used as a call or alarm. For letting soldiers know that it was the end to their end-of-day activities. Which was ordinary back then, it didn´t mean a lot. But then now it is used to symbolize ANZAC. It Is also used to honor the ANZACs and their service.

What does this song represent?

As it was formally used as a military funeral song, it usually signified that he/she is appreciated for his service. That the bugle call indicates the soldier has gone to his final rest.

Here are my My Maps!

Reflection Wananga - Wananga

Hello Everyone!

As usual, every Friday I will be writing about my reflection on anything I want. For today I will be basing my reflection on a book. My favorite book, the best book I have read. It may not be interesting to you, but I love the story, the plot, and just everything about it.

Text title: Solitaire

Text type: Book

Text creator: Alice Oseman

Text purpose: The meaning of the plot

The story behind ´solitaire´ is about a teenage girl and her relationships even partly about her life as I should say. In my opinion, they are mainly basing things on relationships. This can also connect to Hauora, talking about how much I love this book. I love the story, and you can really relate to it as it's about a teenage girl's life. The name solitaire comes from the main problem in the book.

10 English - Holocaust Research

Hello Everyone!

For todayś blog post, I will be writing about my recent English work, which is about the Holocaust. That also relates to the movies we watched in English called ´The Boy in the Striped Pajamas´.

The Holocaust was a very violent, horrific, and traumatic event that is significantly known in history. It was also the time of Hitler and was caused and created by Hitler himself.

Here is my slideshow that shows my research of the Holocaust that are mainly based on these 6 topics:

  • Genocide
  • Nazi Party
  • Kristallnacht
  • Anti-Semitism
  • Gestapo
  • Ghettoes
I hope you learn something from my work, and please give me feedback on your opinion :)

10 Health - Taha Whanau

 Hi Everyone!

For today's blog post, I will be writing to you about my last activity or piece of work Taha Whanau/Social Wellbeing.

Before this work, we had actually watched a movie all about relationships and the different types there were.

This said movie is called ´The Half of It´ it was a really good movie and we needed to make sure we had an understanding of the relationships. So we could summarise them in the end. But that was last week.

So letś start talking about today's work!

We needed to create some sort of poster or presentation representing a type of relationship of our choice. For this, we needed to have a partner or work independently. At first, I was going to work independently as my friends left me sad as we could only be pairs. But then luckily I saw Hope alone! so why not be partners with her.

Of course, I did force her! itś not like she didn´t want to be my buddy, well I hope so, I'm pretty sure she was happy though.

We needed to write down information about a relationship we had chosen and I and Hope picked friendships. We wrote down the information on a document first and then I was going to transfer it to ´Canva´.

(A website you can use to create a presentation for any type of work, e.g and infographic, timeline, poster, animation.)

After we finished writing down all the information I put it on a poster and decorated it a bit simple. So here is the final product!

(For some reason there is a huge gap at the bottom, so it looks a bit funky)

Also! please don forget to comment and give me feedback, if you want the link for the website just give me a comment :)

10 English - Genocide - Film Study

Hi everyone!

Today for my English lesson I will be talking about an article that I have read. This said article Is about the time of Hitler, everything involving the Nazis and the holocaust. We got to pick out of 6 different articles:

  • Nazi Party
  • Genocide
  • Kristallnacht
  • Anti - Semitism
  • Gestapo
  • Ghettoes
I had chosen Genocide, as I feel like this article really explains a lot that happened in the movie 'The Boy in the Striped Pajamas'.

After reading this article I start to understand a lot more about the movie. The reason why the Jews were treated this way is that they were thought to not be human. Their culture was also thought to be inferior to theirs, therefore they thought it was okay to treat their lives like garbage.

I can make this a connection to the movie, regarding what the movie as showing the jew was always and definitely treated like garbage. They have often kicked around or beaten up for a mistake. To the soldiers, the key was to always be brutal and use violence.

In Genocide, there always had to be a superior group and an inferior who always had disadvantages. This was usually regarding your culture, the Jews were always inferior and the opposing side was considered superior.

In the movie Jews had to do all the work and when the soldiers or 'government were down with them. They performed a Holocaust.

10 Social Studies - Parihaka - Music Through Time

Hi Everyone!

Today I will be talking about my recent social studies lessons, we have been learning about one of the most important tragedies the occurred in NZ history. If you don't already know this event it is called Parihaka.

Parihaka is known as a place in NZ but it is also why this place is often used as the name for a terrible event. Parihaka was a place of peace and it was a sacred place. This area was named and found by two spiritual leaders.

Their names were Te Whiti and Tohu, They were very important people and were always worshipped till now. For their kindness, and way of peace.

Here my ´My Maps'of of the place of which were involved in the Parihaka event.

------------------------------------------------

Our job for today is to analyse a song about Parihaka the author is 'Tim Finn'

Parihaka - Tim Finn and the Herbs

What is the main message of this song?

The creator was trying to prove or portray how important Parihaka is. They believe that because of the spirituals leaders. Te Whiti was such a strong and important person, and because of his good doings. For fighting peacefully, and giving his people hope, and care. The author wanted to show how significant the event was and the leaders.

What line describes their passive resistance method?

'Rise up, defend yourself, never give in'

What does 'you can't pull out the roots' refer to?

As Parihaka goes way back into NZ history and is very deep, I guess that's what the songwriter is considering as 'roots'? So I think it because people can't change what happened in the past.

Give evidence of their determination?

Regarding the song already in the first verse, it shows their determination:
'My friend, My friend, I hate to see you suffer,

Events conspire to bring us to our knees,

My friend, my friend, you've taken this the wrong way,

Rise up, defend yourself, never give in,

Look to the sky, the spirit of Te Whiti,

The endless tide is murmuring his name.'

But you can also see this shown in these lyrics.

´To weep for my lost brother.

They gather still, the clouds of Taranaki,

His children's children wearing the white plume,

So take me for the sins of these sad islands´

How does this song show the significance of Parihaka?
First off, already the song itself shows the significance of Parihaka ad itś still acknowledged till now. That many people have shown how they care about Parihaka. The lyrics of the songs create an understanding of Parihaka, it talks about the importance. Thatś why this song is one of the many the shows the significance of Parihaka.

What makes an event significant?
  • When it is still being acknowledged in the future.
  • Many people died and sacrificed themself for the good.
  • An action that someone the creates popularity and benefits.

How many people were affected?
Around 1,600 Parihaka in-habitants were affected including Te Whiti and Tohu, those people were arrested. Regarding online searches around 600 women were left behind. While all the men were sent to jail, the kids and women were left behind and were raped and mistreated. Not only that, but the survivors of the incident who carried on with their life, most probably found it a traumatic event. That could've affected or influenced the relatives and newer generations of the family.

How long were people affected?
The men including Te Whiti and Tohu were arrested and were put to jail for 16 months. Some of them died, of course, this even also affects people even till now.

To what extent were people affected?
They were affected to the point where they still were trying to fight with peace. But it was to the point where all of their houses, crops, and gardens were destroyed.

Home Ec - Flavour, Texture, Colour

 Hi Everyone!

Today for my Home Economics lessons we needed to research and analyse the importance of the flavor, texture, and color in food.

I created a slide talking about the different methods of cooking to benefit these three aspects.

I hope you learn something from it, and please give me feedback :)
