Science - The water cycle.

AIM: TO LOOK AT THE WATER CYCLE AND HOW CLIMATE CHANGE IS AFFECTING IT.

Definition:

The water cycle is where the sun evaporates the water from either the ocean, lakes and etc. Then it will transpire from different plants which are like evaporating water and moist from plants. once it has gone through that process it will create clouds scientifically it would be called condensation. After it would rain since the clouds would be saturated and rain in science this is called precipitation, This process would keep restarted which is called the water cycle.

Scientific words:

  • Evaporation. When water is heated by radiant energy it turns into water vapor.
  • Transpiration. Evaporation from plants.
  • Condensation. When water vapor cools, molecules join together and form clouds.
  • Precipitation. When clouds get heavy the waters falls as rain, sleet, hail, or snow.
  • Acidification: the action or process of making or becoming acidic.

We will be conducting an experiment that looks at the different ways that climate change is affecting the water cycle.

THE WATER CYCLE EXPERIMENT

Bag 1: Normal Water cycle
Bag 2: Water cycle with CO2 added: like Oceans in climate change
Bag 3: Water cycle with ice added: like Antarctica in climate change

Material:

  1.  2 Plastic bag (ziplock)
  2.  Vivid pen
  3.  A cup of water and half a cup of soda water.
  4.  Food coloring
  5. Litmus paper (only for the one with soda water)

Steps:

  1.  Grab a plastic bag (ziplock) it should be partly large.
  2.  Grab a pen and start to draw the clouds, water, trees, and words.
  3.  Pour a cup of water into the bag not too much.
  4.  add at least two drops of food coloring the color of your choice but ideally blue
  5.  Stick the bag on a window where the sun comes through regularly.

Two Images:

Findings:

I think the water will moist in the bag and it will fog up a bit at the top - Condensation
I also the water will become less - Evaporation

I think for the second one the will be more air forming in the bag cause the bag to expand for example when you blow a balloon it will fill up with air, then if we did it right the yellow paper will become red.

Conclusion:

In science today we looked at the water cycle in my past I have already learned about the water cycle but I was a bit foggy after today session it all cleared up. We learned 4 new words the I have not known about before except evaporation since I already knew about it. Today for our researching part we had to find out the definition of the water cycle and include the four words we had learned. It was easy since we were allowed to search up on google but we must put it in our own words after we did a project. That project was including a glad bag if you don't know what that is it is also called a ziplock bag, and on the ziplock bag, we had to draw the water cycle. In the drawing, it had to include a piece of land and on that land had to be planted. it also had to have the ocean, clouds, the sun, and rain. We did the same thing for the second one but it had to be soda water and there would be a special paper cal Litmus paper on and the next time we check it might be red if we did it right. You had to have at least 3 people in your group. I really enjoyed this session of science and it was really fun.

THE BIG PICTURE

  • What animals keep our jackets warm? - birds, sheep, silkworms,
  • What animal makes our boots waterproof? - It was inspiration from ducks since their feathers are waterproof.
  • Where does the water in our rivers come from? - Snow and rainwater, also the groundwater.
  • Why do we need healthy rivers? - because from the river some of the water goes to our tap and then the rest goes to the sea if our water turns bad we would be having bad water since we drink water from the tap.
  • What are some of the good things about mosquitoes? - Their larvae clean all the bacteria from our river like all the slimy stuff. Also, they are excellent pollinators for our flower which is good for our environment. We would no fish hungry birds and dirty drinking water.
  • Why are bees dying? - 30 to 40% of them die every year some people think it's because of cellphone towers, pesticides, exotic mites, and predators on the bee's body.
  • What do bugs do to our leaves - They reduce Reuse and recycle.
  • R - Reduce
  • R - Re-use
  • R - Recycle
  • How much dung would we be in if there were no dung decomposers? - 7 feet of dung.
  • Who runs this planet? - Nature and all the living things on this planet that's what makes the planet.

GROUP ACTIVITY;

  1. Groups of 3 or 4 students.
  2. Need A3 copy paper.

THE ICECAPS HAVE MELTED. MOST OF THE LAND IN THE WORLD HAS BEEN FLOODED AND YOU AND YOUR FRIENDS ARE ON A BOAT IN THE MIDDLE OF NOWHERE. YOUR BOAT IS SUDDENLY STRUCK BY A STORM AND YOU BECOME SHIPWRECKED ON A SMALL ISLAND. YOU ARE ONLY ALLOWED TO SELECT 20 ITEMS FOR YOUR GROUP. A SECOND BOAT IS TRAVELLING NEAR YOU BUT WILL NOT BE ABLE TO REACH YOU FOR 1 MONTH SO YOU NEED TO GATHER ENOUGH SUPPLIES TO LAST FOR A MONTH.

In your group you need to:

1. Make a list of the 10 things you are going to collect.
2. Draw a map of the island.
4. Draw and label the activities you will be involved with.
  • Renewable energy sites ( wind, solar, hydro, )
  • Living/shelter
  • Growing food
  • Write 3 sentences about how your group is going to live for the next month.
When you are drawing your map you need to list 4 places you can have renewable energy sites.

Hurumanu - Fossil Fuels

 Image result for coal mining
Aim: To look at how fossil fuels are contributing to climate change and how we can prevent this.

Definition of Fossil Fuels:

Fossil Fuels is a natural fuel such as cola or gas, formed in the geological past from the remains of living organisms.
Scientific Terms for Students
  • coal: a dark-brown to a black solid substance formed naturally from the compaction and hardening of fossilized plants and used as a fuel primarily for electricity generation
  • natural gas: a mixture of hydrocarbon gases that occurs naturally beneath the earth’s surface and is used as a fuel primarily for cooking and heating homes
  • renewable resource: a resource that is never used up (e.g., solar energy)
  • non-renewable resource: a resource that is not replaceable after its use (e.g., coal, gas)

Examples of Fossil Fuels:
  1.   oil
  2.   coal
  3.  natural gas

Activity:

In groups of 3, you will learn about different fossil fuels and the way they are mined?
Each group will be given a fossil fuel. The recorder will read it to the group. The recorder will write down some of the important points.
Person 1: Recorder: to write down 5 points of interest from the text.
  1. 5 Points:
  2. Positives and negatives of your type of mining.
Person 2: Reporter: to read back to the class their 5 points of interest.
Person 3: Collector: Gathers the required stationary from the teacher.

Mining Fossil Fuels

What Fossil Fuels are mined? Coal, oil and natural gas
How are they mined?

1.Coal - Coal is mined by the extractions of coal deposits from the surface and underground of earth,
2. Oil - Machines as gravimeters and magnetometers can be used in searching for oil, by drilling well into an underground reservoir.
3. Natural gas is normally mined like oil is, First a large drilling machine is drilled into the dirt and soil to the natural gas.

Where are they mined?

1. The United States
2. Australia
3. Russia
4. China
5. South Africa

    Activity;

On the sheet provided you need to make two drawings of your cookie.
    1. looking down at it.
    2. side on -  of the imaginary habitat that will live on the top of the cookie. ( trees, buses, flax, sea, etc)

    Material:

    1.  Cookie
    2.   Paper
    3.   Pen
    4.  toothpick
    Steps:
    1.  First, you need to draw the cookie don't break because you need to compare the cookie after you remove the chocolate chip.
    2. After that, you need to draw a habitat it can a forest or something you want.
    3.   There is some question below that you need to answer about to the habitat you need to answer these questions.
    4.   After that, you need to remove the chocolate chips from the cookie using the toothpick and draw the cookie again.
    5.   You need to draw your habitat and imagine that some people do mining on your habitat.
    6.   After your done drawing you need to answer the question about how it changes and what happened on the life of the living things that live on your habitat.
Once you have drawn your cookies you must take 2 pictures and upload them to your blog.

    Findings:

Drama📜- Ways to be physically active.

This weeks drama our wonderful teacher Miss K has decided for us to work on physical activity, which I love in my opinion I find physical activity really enjoyable and you can also be fit and stay fit when doing in it.
Here are 5 ways to be physically active.
    • Leave your keys at home often so you can take a walk, walking can be very helpful for you first you are helping the environment and also you are keeping yourself fit.
    • Play a fun round of sports with friends or family, for example, you can play football or hockey.
    • You can join dance classes or just have a dance party when you dance you can lose a lot of fat and it can also keep you fit and healthy.
    • Swimming is another great way to keep fit and healthy it is something that you can do if you don't like getting sweaty or hot.
    • You can also do yoga it is a relaxing and fun way to get fit.

    Christiano Ronaldo -
    • He stays on a healthy diet to keep healthy he eats and drinks. - Fruit juice, Fish, Drinks plenty of fluids, Fruits, vegetables, whole grains.
    • He is always exercising
    • He makes sure he has mental strength.
We did hot seating which is a small game where you have 3 or more people in a group and you all decide which person will sit in on the seat. The rest of the people will have come up with questions to ask the person on the seat. In my class, we had to get into a group of 3 in my group I was the person on the hot seat our questions had to be about physical activity.

I really liked this session of drama and enjoyed

Aim: To look at the causes of climate change and how to prevent it.

As you watch the video answer these questions:

What is our greatest threat in thousands of years?

We might not have any land since the land might be flooded due to sea level rise. There also might be air pollution, if there was a flood would there be enough time to get a boat will the news alert us? If we fix the flood would we know how to fix the drought?

How do we see climate change affecting the globe?
    1.   Antarctica melting causing sea level rise because of the factories releasing air pollution in the air.
    2.   The heat increasing to dangerous temperatures.
    3.   it might not rain anymore due to air pollution When the heat increases the temperature of the ocean will affect the water quality and also accelerate water pollution.

What is needed to change history?
We need to take care of our planet and stop littering. less use of cars and more uses of biking or our legs, we are causing this bad history and we need to change, we need to stop cutting down tree's so our atmosphere can stay strong.
    Urgent action from us humans.

Is climate change a man-made disaster?
yes, since we are the thing that had caused our planet to heat up from fossil fuels. The heat rays will be stronger since our atmosphere which would cause more drought and Antarctica melting. some of us humans have not yet realized climate change and when they do it might be too late.

Dramatic action must be made in the next _10_ years to change it?
Because animals are dying because of climate change and if we don't react fast some animals could go extinct, The sea level is rising if we don't help countries could be disappearing. our world could be taken away from our hands since we couldn't take full responsibility from where we live.

    Why is our climate changing?
Because of heat rays, extreme heats, super storms, drought, sea level rise, human's polluting, cutting down the tree's it's all because of us humans.

What is causing the warming trend of the climate?
Cars, Fossil fuels, pollution, factories, melting of huge amounts of ice, heat rays. that we are causing.

    What is the main problem?
Climate change, the air is polluted which causes holes in our protective atmosphere which cause powerful rays of the sun affecting our land, animals and us.
What are the examples of these?
    Cars and factories.

Burning fossil fuels releases what gas?
When burning fossil fuels the factories release Carbon dioxide.

How much hotter now is our world?
    1-degree Celsius

What do we call this global warming?
In my opinion, it is called climate change.

How is this affecting creatures/animals like bats?
It is getting hotter and hotter, where the bats cannot tolerate longer the parents of the baby are dying and the way they keep themselves cool is no longer working.

What percentage of species are near extinction?
    8 percent in total.

How could this affect the world ecosystems?
For example, the rain forests since it is always moist can become dry and affect the animals and insects which live there they will not be used to it and can die.

What global change was seen and recording breaking last year?
    The huge fire.

How is climate change affecting our weather systems?
    1. There is an increase in heat.
    2. More rain which causes flooding.
    3. Superstorms.

What is another effect of climate change?
It can affect animals since there will be change

What will happen if the ice melts in Antarctica and the Arctic?
All of Earth. will be flooded and there will be no land left for us to live on when that happens.

    How does this affect people?
People may not be used to the weather, and also
What other things affect oceans change?
The heat since it can change the temperature of the ocean.

What does to much heat do to coral?
It completely kales down the coral.

Why did some industries not want to stop burning fossil fuels?
Because fossil fuels help us for example cars and cars help people with disabilities. and also since it is the fuel of transportation which some people really need. Also, it gives us energy for our electronics.

    Game Coding?!

Hello People!, For the past few weeks in one of our hurumanu's my class 7/8AL and Whaea's class 7/8WH have been learning how to create a game throughout coding. Our game needed to be based on the earth for e.g the pollution in the water or on land, or the animals, My game was based on the pollution in the water. I did not finish the game and I was not able to finish coding the rubbish so it will be able to become collectible, overall the rest is fine so if you want to have fun go ahead and give a shot!

♡If you would like to have a go at the game click the link below ♡

If that one does not work click this one

    <iframe src='https://storage.googleapis.com/files.gamefroot.com/users/3156118/games/148149/gamefroot-2019-5-3T23-

I really enjoyed this hurumanu I have learned how to code although it was no the easiest task I have also learned more about my Kaitiaki, for example, Tane Mahuta he is the god of trees. and all the others to make it easier to understand it is like the gods in New Zealand for the Earth's elements. Tane Mahuta for the tree and the birds, Tawhirimatea is the god of the weather he controls the wind and basically, things involving the weather Tangaroa is the god of the ocean or as some say the sea he is the habitat of all marine animals. In this hurumanu, the thing I found hard was doing the coding not when I was practicing but when we had to do it for the actual game making luckily we had gamefroot. gamefroot is a website when you can make games and apps and so on all the scripts are already made for you and they are designed for a specific purpose for e.g the coins are made to be a collectible. What made me keep going and not giving up was that my friends were able to help me out when I needed it, I was not very good at it but overall I really enjoyed this project and if we had to do it again I would enjoy it.

I used gamefroot since it is an easy app as I said before I don't have to stress myself out with making the scripts it is already made and there are also different versions you can do I did have to touch up and edit some scripts.

When learning this we had to research about it the teachers had shown us videos about what we need to make our game about.

If you want more go to youtube and search for e.g The ocean is speaking.

What did you like about my post and why?
Have you coded or want to try give me a reason why you want to/What you like about it?
