My Timeline

For social studies, I had to create a timeline that included the Black Death, COVID - 19, and dates that are important to us. From the top is the oldest date and you could get the idea in what order it would go.

It is nice doing these kinds of things as it is very boring just staying home all day, and not really having anything to do.

COVID - 19

Before the lockdown, I had made a slide based on COVID - 19. It was to show what it is how to prevent it and the symptoms. So no one has to panic about it because the preventions were such easy things to do.

Staying Mentally Well - Health

As it's a level 4 lockdown it is compulsory to do schoolwork at home, as we will be missing school for a month. Since it's level 4, we never know if it will be extended due to the current event getting worse.

For my health project, I needed to create a presentation based on one of the topics shown on the slides. It was also optional if you wanted to work in a pair, so I decided to work with one of my friends. Her name is Skyler (https://hpsskyler.blogspot.com/)

For the topic, Skyler and I decided to do Staying mentally well. The task for this topic was to pick one of the underlinings. Then to make a presentation about it, we picked stress. But it was out of stress, depression, anxiety, phobias, or panic attacks.

Here is the slide:

Mount Vesuvius Eruption

The Daily Stone News

Now a Ghost Town City
March 16, 2020
Mount Vesuvius Eruption
WHAT HAPPENED……….
On the 24th of August 79 A.D the famous Mount Vesuvius
had erupted. It was such a tragic event. It had been
unpredictable to have such an event to occur. For two days
and nights, the volcano had been pouring out lava.
It was raining rocks, the smoke and ashes substituted the sky.
Leaving no sunlight but always in the darkness. It had killed
almost everyone in the city. Which left only a few people to
survive that terrible event. Which could have led to trauma
back in the day. After the eruption, Pompeii was a forgotten city
for almost 1700 years. No one had gone back during those
years it had been a ghost city. The lava had preserved the city
leaving its original form, showing how things were
like back in the day. This was a tragic event
so it was always remembered.

Rats and Mice - Social studies

For another one of our independent tasks in social studies, I did one based on rats and mice. Both of them had to be watched with videos because the questions were based on them. So you had to make sure you remember what the host was saying. Sometimes you would have to watch the video again, luckily it was only a short video.

Here is my work:

Rats and Mice:

Where did this happen?
  • At a farm

How did this happen?
  • The rats started to since they are one of the most sexually active animals, also because of a rain flood and they hid in the farm and kept breeding.

How much offspring (babies) can 2 mice parents make?
  • About 2,000 babies in a matter of months.

How much wheat did the mice eat?
  • 500,00 tons of wheat, which could have been a supply for 4 years.

How did they get rid of the mice and how many dead mice were there?
  • Hey used lots of poison, which they spread through air and land. Within just a few days 100 million mice corpses were found.

Rat Temple:

Where is this happening?
  • Rat Temple in Northern India.

Why is this happening?
  • Because some people believe in reincarnation, and they believe that they are their family. They also think that they are from the gods.

What special treatment do these rats get?

  • They get to be treated as humans.

Chromotography

Aim: To separate the different pigments from ink using chromatography.

Hypothesis: I this the dot of colour will spread right to the top of the strip of the paper, and through the process, the colour will fade.

Equipment:

  • Felt tip pen
  • Filter paper strips
  • Test tube
  • Measuring cylinder
  • Pencil.
Method:
  • Draw a line across the filter paper in pencil, 5cm from the bottom.
  • Draw a coloured dot in the centre of the line.
  • Measure out 10mL of water and place in the test tube.
  • Place the filter paper in the test tube and fold over the side. MAKE SURE THE PENCIL LINE IS NOT IN THE WATER.
  • Wait for 5 minutes and observe the results

Observation:
My first colour - For my first experiment which was a bright magenta colour, It didn't change into any other colour. But it did fade, the dot went up as the water was going up when the paper absorbed more water. When you took out the paper you could that this colour was not made with many colours.

My second colour - For my second experiment which the colour black, I was really surprised by the results. The colours in black were really concentrated so it didn't really fade that much. I was surprised because it was made with lots of colours, like orange, brown, purple, and blue.

As an extra experiment, my partner and I did a rainbow to see what would happen, and it looked really pretty. The colours just kept mixing so it was kind of like going on top of each other. But I think since it lots of colours on it, it takes longer to get the paper to absorb more water.

Conclusion:
My Hypothesis was kind of right because it happened for my first colour but not really for the other two. I think it's because it depends on the colour you use like if it's a primary colour it won't be made with lots of other colours. But a non-primary colour would probably be made in many colours.

Separating a Mixture using Evaporation

Aim:
We are trying to Evaporate to separate liquid and solids, with just solids remaining in the basin at the end and liquids in the beaker.

Hypothesis:
I think many crystals will form of the color blue as the sulfate is blue, and that the crystals will be all kinds of shapes and sizes. Since this is about evaporation I think the sulfate liquids will evaporate by the heat and will be turned into steam.

Equipment:
  • Copper Sulfate Solution
  • 250ml beaker
  • heatproof mat
  • evaporating basin
  • element
Method:
  • Set up your bunsen burner if you don't have one use a stove.
  • Add 50 milliliters of water into the beaker and place it onto the bunsen burner.
  • Add Sulfate Copper into the basin and make sure it fills up to about a quarter of the basin.
  • Carefully place the evaporating basin on top of the beaker.
  • If you have a stove turn it to 8, if not turn you bunsen burner till the flame is blue.
  • Heat the solution until most of the solvent has been evaporated, til small forms of crystals have appeared.
  • Turn of the fire/elements, be careful not to touch the top as it will be hot as you might get minor burns.
Observations: For my observation after around 2 - 5 minutes the water started to boil, and solute started to smell unusual. After 5 - 10 minutes we noticed in other people basins there were crystals. Apart from ours and a few others, there were big particles of crystals but pretty small. There was also still some liquids left.

Weekly CARR Blogpost.

Today for our weekly CARR  blog post I am going to explain what things I did this week that showed at least two of the values. CARR is an acronym, which means each letter stands for something and each of those letters our school values.
C - Commitment
A - Achievement
R - Resilience
R  Respect

Commitment - I have shown commitment because I joined badminton again, even though I couldn't participate in the tournament last year. Badminton is my passion it is something I love doing, I didn't want to give up since last year I have been training hard. So this year I wanted to try my very best and I will because if you really want to achieve something you can't get there with no effort. You have to throw yourself out there and strive to beat your best.

Achievement - With the achievement, I had achieved something in art, since last week I had been trying to go well with my drawing and painting. Because at the start by visually looking at it it wasn't so good compared to others. The reason is that I told myself that "Everyone else has such good drawings and painting why should I try." The next I did art I wanted to try my best and care about my drawing so after watching videos. I did what I was supposed to do and wow I was surprised, I actually did pretty well my blending and shading looked great! So that what I achieved believing in myself and doing great art.

Resilience - I had and a performance yesterday, in front of a lot of people and this very nerve-racking. Maybe if it was you probably didn't want to do it anymore well that's how it felt like for me my heart was beating so fast. My teacher, my parents, and parents of best friends were all watching, I wanted to impress them. So I decided to get that feeling out of the way and just do it so that's what I did and it went well. I also had completed a level three reading test then a level 4 test and one that was really hard which was level 5. It was about reading something then you needed to comprehend it.

Respect - I respect My parents by looking after my three little sisters every day, after all, it is my obligation to make sure they eat, drink, and are safe. But of course, my parents respect my life too so they make sure I'm looking after my sister 24/7 when I'm home. They give me my own time and still have and having an ordinary 13-year-old girl's life. If you treat someone nicely you will get the same thing back in the future.

Tsunami Graph

Today in my social studies I had created a bar graph based on the tallest tsunami in history. Called the "Alaskan Tsunami" this tsunami occurred on the 10th of July 1958. The graph shows how tall it is and what it is taller than. As extra information, the tsunami was taller than 500 metres to be exact 530 metres. That is taller than the empire state building which is 450 metres, so there is a big distance between the two of them.

Here is my graph -

Athletics Day 2020

Hello fellow people!

Yesterday, on the 5th of March, Hornby High School had their school athletics for 2020. Beforehand you were supposed to pick between competitive and social, social is where you do athletics but your scores don't matter. It's just a matter of trying and participating, you could even just skip or walk for sprints! For competitive it's the opposite you have to care about scores and be competitive. So you have to try your very best so you can get a high score. Which leads you to have an opportunity to participate in the Canterbury athletics. I have never picked competitive I had always picked social, so of course I picked social again.

The day started off with us doing our first two periods of the day and having a short morning tea to get food into us. It took a while until we had our first round which was discuss. This particular sport is something I'm bad as I have small and wimpy arms before we went to discuss. My friends and I decided to watch the competitor's sprints and they were really fast. When I did discuss I was really surprised because I didn't want to try my best which you were allowed to do. As long as you participated, But it actually went pretty far. It stayed in the plate position while it was in the air which has never happen to me. After that we did sprints, and I was really excited because I love doing sprints but it turns out I trained too hard. For nothing, because I wanted to verse people and be fast but they decided to walk so It was a bit embarrassing.

Next, we played shotput that was also our last it went decently far for my spaghetti arms so I was proud of myself. I achieved coming first in the sprints which didn't matter but was still proud of myself. The relay at the end was amazing I was screaming and cheering for  blue house. I was smiling at the end and was happy for my house which is blue. Because they won after trying so hard. This year my athletics was boring because I wanted to compete so now that I have learned my lesson. Next year I will be joining competitive instead so I can really run my best with competing with other people. I also want to be able to compete because I am competitive I love winning but I am not a sore loser.

My Timeline - 9/11

Recently for the past few days, I have been working on a timeline using Visme, it's a website that can help you with creating different projects. The 9/11was really disastrous for New York as many people died on that day. Now that day is called patriots day to honour all the people who have died, for the innocent and the people died being a hero.

Here is my Timeline -
