Aim: To learn practical ways of recycling so that we can make our world a better place.
How can we prevent climate change by recycling these products?
Plastics: If you don't reuse plastic it would be bad since plastic does not biodegrade. Then it would be left in the landfill which will cause methane and once methane is released into the air it causes more air pollution.

Cycling or walking: If you walk and or ride a bike you lessen driving a car since cars can cause Carbon Dioxide.
Paper: If we reuse paper it will lessen the need for cutting down more trees.
Steel: If you don't reuse steel it will be the normally be labeled as garbage and will be buried under a landfill. Or we will burn them and once we burn it cause more pollution on land and air.
Video questions:
What is Zero Waste?
Zero waste is one of the quickest and affordable ways a community immediately reduces the impact on climate change.
What can we do on the planet?
What can we do on the planet?
- Repair broken objects or machines
- Reduce
- Reuse
- Recycle
What do we need to recycle?
Put biodegradable materials into the green waste bin so we can help stabilize the soil. Also Plastic, steel, and paper.
What does recycling do?
We can shut down 20% of coal factories which can be done immediately and it can prevent pollution.
How much of our rubbish is food scraps?
90,000
What does soil do to carbon dioxide in the atmosphere?
Soil can decrease carbon dioxide but also since soil can help grow plants it is also good since plants eat carbon dioxide since that is the source to create there leaves and stems.
What do we need to do?
- Make Changes
- Have Zero __waste_________
What is a carbon footprint?
How can you make your Carbon Footprint smaller?
Carbon footprint goals:
1. Walk to school and less driving to school
2. Take faster showers
3.during the day use the sunlight and not use the electricity
ENERGY SAVING TIPS FILM
Name 4 of the tips.
- Turn off the lights if you are not in the house/room or when you're leaving.
- Turn off the microwave it is best to only turn when going to use.
- Walk or ride a bike instead of using a car or public transportation.
- Take faster showers and instead of taking a bath to take a shower.
AT WHAT RATES DO DIFFERENT ITEMS DECOMPOSE?
MY INVESTIGATION.
Choose 5 items from the list and investigate them.
1. If you recycle your ordinary paper it can create cardboard, newspaper, paper towels, napkins and so on. Paper can create things that e use every day that we most need. If we don't recycle paper what will we have to write on or if we don't have paper how can we read the newspaper in the mornings?

2. Glass bottles-
A glass bottle can create containers, Highway marking beads, and one of the cool things it can make is sandglass which purifies water. Glass bottle can also keep water purified and fresh.
3. Orange peel-
Orange peels are soon to be known as a biofuel, A story has been told of a company dumping 12,000 tons of orange peel into a national. a year later their project had to be shut down because of a lawsuit. 15 years later they went back to view potential sites for studies, and when the had visited an old forest had come back to life because of the orange peels. You can also use it to create a sponge or use it as a wood polish.
4. leaves-
Leaves can create rooftops for houses, clothes, hats you can name it they can also be a source of fertilization.
5.Milk Carton-
Sayin a website it says in NZ there is no company that recycle milk cartons instead they go to landfill.
- How long do they take to decompose? -
Paper - 2-4 weeks
Glass Bottles - 500 years/Forever?
Orange Peel - 3-6 months
Leaves - 1-3 months
Milk Carton - 5 years
2. What resource/fossil fuel are they made from? -
Paper - Pulp Cotton from the wood in tree's
Glass Bottles - Glass is made from sand, soda, ash, and limestone they use natural gas and heat furnaces which uses coal to create the bottle shape.
Orange peel - Orange seeds
Leaves - They are made from carbon dioxide
Milk Carton - They are made from wood pulp but mixed with hardwood and softwood,
3. How is this resource recycled?
3. How is this resource recycled?
Paper - Paper when recycled is taken to a machine where it will separate the kinds and grades of paper once done it will wash any extra writing or inks off with soapy water. When done it creates a slurry which then creates different kinds of paper materials like cardboard, newspaper, etc.
Glass Bottles - When you throw glass bottles into the yellow bin it will be taken into a machine which then separates and discolors all the bottles. Once done it will be crushed and melted down to be reused for created new glass products like a glass bottle can be turned into a glass jug.
Orange Peel - With orange peels, you can add to your compost heap to create soil or you create different kinds of things like Limoncino or Arancino.
Leaves - AN idea is once you start mowing the lawn you can add the leaves that have fallen off trees onto your lawn and mow them up so your lawn can shred them up to pieces the size of grass clippings. Which will cause the leaves to decompose faster.
Milk Carton - You should place the cartons into bins with Glass containers, Steel, etc. Most people would think it needs to go in the bin with paper and things well It's not right. Because yes although the outside of a milk carton is paper/card paper in the inside it is aluminum.
4. How does this object contribute to climate change?
Paper - Because of us always needing paper more ree's need to be cut and because ree's eat carbon dioxide once the trees are cut down. It will release its carbon dioxide contains in the air which will cause air pollution.
Glass Bottles - When glass bottles are created it needs heat to create its form which means it needs fossil fuels which is coal to heat up a furnace and the carbon dioxide released can't stay inside. So we let carbon go outside into the air which will cause air pollution and also air temperature increase.
Orange peels - There is nothing of orange peels that contribute to climate change.
Leaves - Mostly leaves are the things that are helping to decrease climate change and not contributing but ways leaves can help is because they feed off carbon dioxide and release oxygen.
Milk Carton - This is not based on milk cartons but since milk is related to milk cartons it is because dairy cows produce manure which releases greenhouse gas into the atmosphere.
