SEXXXY Paragraphs - Coraline - Film Study

What am I learning?

I am learning to effectively explain scenes and themes in the movie Coraline through SEXXXY paragraphs.

How does this work show my learning?

Because SEXXXY paragraphs are sort of evidence of your work, we need to state the techniques, we also need to explain the purpose, effect. We need to provide examples and a link through the movie. If we present our work through the SEXXXY paragraph it can also give an idea to the audience about the movie. Not only that we can also thoroughly understand the movie and those small details.

What am I wondering as a result of this learning?

While I was writing the SEXXXY paragraphs I found it easier because the SEXXXY is an easy guide to understand. It also started to make me realize the small details in the movie, giving me a full understanding of the scenes and themes.

SEXXXY Paragraph’s - Coraline

S: In the movie Coraline, camera angles and shots are definitely shown properly to match the

themes, most-likely the looks can be deceiving.

E: As an example, in this shot, we can see that it is a high angle shot. This is the first time

meeting Wybie in the ‘other world’. The shot is used to show Coraline and her parent's

perspective looking down at Wybie. Since he is at the bottom of the stairs.

X: This shows that Wybie seems powerless or vulnerable. Making it seem that there is an

imbalance of power. The powerful side seems to be whoever is at the top of the stairs.

X: The director had done this to show that the ‘other world’ is Coraline's world. She gets to see

what she wants to see, so Wybie seems less talkative, friendly, and trustworthy.

X: This shot worked well with the lighting because the warm lighting made Wybie seem friendly.

It was sort of a comforting vibe.

Y: If we compare this scene to the scene where Coraline met Wybie in the ‘real world’. We can see a great difference in the ‘real world’ He seemed scary, dominant, and untrustworthy. I think this was because he grew up in that neighborhood. He obviously knew more than Coraline when it came to the environment.

S: In the movie Coraline, camera angles and shots are definitely shown properly to match the

themes, most-likely the looks can be deceiving. This scene is where it all starts.

E: For example in this scene of Coraline’s ‘other mother’ scolding her about acting rudely

towards her. This scene was shown through a medium close-up shot.

X: This makes the audience feel intimidated, or uneasy. Because this is Coraline’s POV and you

could really feel like you were the one getting told off.

X: To really direct the attention of the mother. The director used this particular shot. Because

this is where her attitude changes. Also, the director doesn't just want to just show the

‘other mothers’ transformation. But he also wants to show the theme in the background.

X: This worked well with the theme because you can still see the background. It is no longer

warm, and friendly colors. It is sort of a color that makes it feel darker making you feel uneasy.

Y: This can be juxtaposed to Coraline’s first time meeting the ‘other mother’. You can see a slight difference with the vibe, the way of speaking, and appearance.

S: In the movie Coraline, camera angles and shots are definitely shown properly to match the

themes.

E: For example here is the scene you first see when the movie starts. It’s sort of the intro. Of

course, at the start, you don’t know who these people are. Here in this scene, it is shown through

a point of view angle. This is where the ‘other mother’ was making Coraline’s replica doll.

X: This would make the audience feel intrigued, creeped out because of the hand. They must be

interested, wondering “who is this person?” and “what is this supposed to mean?”

X: The director did this to really catch the audience’s interest. To get them attached to the movie.

So showing an interesting yet confusing clip at the start. Would be a good idea so the audience

won’t get bored.

X: This worked well to catch the audience’s attention. The point of view angle really intrigues

the audience. So I think the director was very smart with how he was going to portray the movie.

Y: Coinciding with this is when the movie actually started you could see that it was kind of a boring start. So starting with that interesting clip. Could make it last through that short boring part of the movie.

S: In the movie Coraline, camera angles and shots are definitely shown properly to match the

themes, most-likely the looks can be deceiving.

E: For example, you can see this photo and it is the last transformation of the ‘other mother’.

In this scene, I could say that a medium-long shot has been used. As the ‘other mother’s’ is close

up while Coraline is partially far. But still close to the point where you still see her in slight detail.

The theme seemed very spine-chilling. Giving you a vibe where something will pop out. Sort of

out of horror movies.

X: Honestly since I’m part of the audience, I had felt a bit frightened, and scared. Because the

‘other mother’ was so close. Her back was turned from Coraline so she seemed very suspicious.

Also, the theme music and colors had complimented this clue. This is where she was waiting for

Coraline to find her real parents I presume.

X: The director had done this to make the people feel a bit frightened. Also suspicious of the

‘other mother’ making it seem like she’s lying.

X: This worked well with the theme and shots, as you could kind of get a clue. Although it’s

towards the end you want to watch more. We may think it’s what we think. But we also have the

thought that it could just be the opposite.

Y: This aspect can be compared to the first meeting between Coraline and the ‘other mother’.

The ‘other mother’ seemed so friendly and trustworthy at the start. As you can see she ended up

being the opposite of what we thought she was.
