Dirty Water Filtration Experiment

Dirty Water Filtration Experiment

Aim: To make a filtration plant using household materials.

What is filtration?

Filtration is separating solids from liquids by adding a medium through which only the liquid can pass.

Examples are:

  1. Air Conditioners and a vacuum can also filter dust and pollen from the air
  2. Coffee filters can separate the grounds
  3. Liquid filtrations
  4. Cake filter
  5. Kidney filter

Materials

  1. Plastic bottle
  2. Scissors
  3. sand
  4. pebbles
  5. Filter paper
  6. Dirty water/liquid
  7. Measuring cup (optional)

Process - ( use verbs or doing words in each step )

Step 1

Cut the bottle in half with a pair of scissors with you ending up with the top piece and the bottom piece separated.

Step 2

Put the top half of the bottle inside the other half of the bottle making the top piece as a funnel and the bottom as
the container holding the liquid.

STEP 3

Add a filter paper - (you need to fold it the correct way if you want it to work) fold the filter paper in half, then half it again
making four counters leave it in the position and open one of the slits. Then place it in the bottle with the pointy bit down
the neck.

STEP 4

Add half a cup of sand ( any kind of sand  ) into the filter paper while it is in the bottle.

STEP 5

Place half a cup more of pebbles on top of the sand and the filter paper making layers.

STEP 6

Pour dirty water or any other liquid you want to filter into the funnel in the speed you want depending on how you want it to
filter, my recommendation is that you go slowly.

STEP 7

Observe if the water is coming out clear or the liquid is separating chunks from the liquid. It will most probably still come out dirty but it is because it will need some time for your filter to filter out clear water.

Our experiment was ok we probably did not do the steps properly since the water was dripping a bit fast also the dripping color was nearly the same color as the dirty water we poured in the funnel. but we tried our best and we still did the experiment. We were not the only ones who got the same ending product, In my group was Lhysette, Shiela, Skyler and
including me. I enjoyed this experiment a lot and since this was our first proper experiment in our science module.
My prediction was that it would come out super clear and we could drink it but in reality my prediction was wrong but it was
because of scientific reasons.

You've done really well on this blogpost and explaining the steps maybe next time you could make the words bigger. What are your next steps?
